Reports from China suggest that French shipping and logistics company CMA CGM has has contracted with China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) for the construction of as many as 16 large containerships, to be built at three CSSC shipyards.

There will be 12 vessels of 15,000 TEU capacity, prepared for operation on methanol fuel, which will be built at Dalian and Jiangnan, as well as four LNG-fuelled 23,000 TEU ultra-large containerships to be built at the Hudong-Zhonghua yard.

The 15,000 TEU vessels will be 366m in length, and are expected to have an EEDI measurement of some 60% lower than conventional vessels which should enable them to comply with the most stringent future emissions regulations. The larger vessels will be 399.9m long, and with 18,000m3 of LNG fuel capacity will enable long ocean voyages.

THis latest order continues a long-term cooperation between CSSC and CMA CGM, which includes delivery of the CMA CGM Jacques Saade, the first LNG-fuelled 23,000 TEU containership.
