A concept design for a VLCC fuelled by green methanol, produced joinly by China’s Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co, part of China State Shipping Corporation and COSCO Shipping Energy has received approval in principle (AiP) from classification societies DNV and CCS.
The project is described as “a forward-looking cooperative research and development project jointly carried out by the two sides after the successful R&D, design and construction of the first worldwide LNG dual-fuel VLCC for COSCO Shipping Energy by DSIC”. The two companies say they share a goal of reduced emissions and carbon neutrality in shipping, contributing to the zero carbon future of the shipping industry.
As a ship assembly enterprise with R&D, design, construction and equipment manufacturing capabilities, DSIC considers itself at the forefront in the application of green and environment-friendly new technologies such as wind-assisted propulsion and LNG as fuel. DSIC has been engaged in innovation and development of low- and zero-carbon green eco-ships, and is committed to providing shipowners with integrated solutions for energy conservation and carbon reduction. DSIC expects to work hand in hand with trusted shipowning partners to contribute to zero carbon ship commercialisation.
