FKAB-DESIGNED GREEN CHEMICAL TANKER IS LAUNCHED

May 13, 2025 | Ship design & naval architecture news

FKAB Ship Design of Sweden has announced the launch of its latest vessel, the T53, 6700 dwt stainless steel chemical tanker ‘Solstraum’, owned by Utkilen, built by Icdas and classified by Bureau Veritas.

The vessel is designed for unrestricted worldwide operation, fuelled by with LNG or LBG, Ice class 1A, incorporating various energy saving measures including an optimised hull form with the patented F-Bow.

It features very low fuel consumption, at an optimised eco-speed of 12.5 knots at 60% MCR with a 15% sea margin at design draught. The main engine is assisted by an output from the variable frequency shaft generator of 200 kW

According to FKAB, the main engine is capable of operating with a ‘skip fire’ functionality that allows the main engine to be used as an auxiliary when running on LNG, which improves energy efficiency and cuts emissions. Other energy and emission-saving measures include a UPS and battery pack, twisted flap rudder, Mewis duct and rudder bulb, and use of wasteheat recovery for tank cleaning operations.

The Utkilen T53 is a 7800 m3, ice class 1A, stainless steel oil/chemical tanker (IMO II &III) suitable for worldwide unrestricted operation, particularly designed for harsh North Sea weather. It is designed with high standard European accommodation and equipment, cargo capacity with a density of 1,85 ton/m3 and partial filling of 2.0 ton/m3 with a maximum temperature of 80°C and 0,6 bar overpressure.
