AiP FROM BV FOR HUDONG-ZHONGHUA CLEAN ENERGY VESSEL DESIGNS

Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has awarded approval in principle (AIP) to three new clean energy and low-carbon fuel-powered vessel designs developed by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group.

The approvals are thought to highlight Hudong-Zhonghua’s technological capabilities in driving innovation for a more sustainable maritime industry.

The awarded designs include:

  • 174,000 m³ ice-strengthened LNG carrier: Part of Hudong-Zhonghua’s G5 ‘Changheng’ series, this LNGC (plus version) measures 299.0m in length, 46.4m in breadth, and 11.5m in design draught, with a service speed of 19.5 knots. Equipped with the GTT NO96 Super+ membrane cargo containment system, it meets Ice Class IA requirements. The vessel is designed to deliver efficient, low-carbon solutions for LNG transportation. Key advantages include: high performance in ice zones with reduced emissions; deck design for extreme temperature resistance and global operability; and smart operation and maintenance with extensive route coverage
  • 8,000 TEU LNG-powered container ship: The 260m × 42.8m × 24.8m ship features a dual-island design, compatible with independent or membrane-type LNG fuel tanks (6,600m³ capacity). The vessel is positioned as a highly competitive, sustainable solution for global container transport. Key advantages include: green and eco-friendly operations; safety, reliability, and high cargo capacity; energy efficiency, optimal comprehensive performance, and flexible gas handling
  • 102,000m³ NO96 Ethane Carrier (VLEC): This VLEC (230m × 36.6m × 11.9m) incorporates the GTT NO96 membrane cargo containment system and an innovative three-cargo hold design, boosting loading capacity by 10.4% compared to similar-sized vessels. Considered the ‘top cargo carrier’ in the VLEC segment, it offers a robust, environmentally responsible platform for transporting high-methane ethane cargo worldwide. Key advantages include: ethane dual-fuel propulsion system and full-capacity reliquefaction; enhanced economic viability and operational flexibility; and significant construction cost savings
