BV CLASS FOR CHINESE LOW-CARBON MODEL PCTC DESIGN

Oct 6, 2025 | Ship classification news

Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has classed the ‘AICC Fenghuang’, a dual-fuel PCTC which will serve as a low-carbon, eco-friendly model at sea and play a vital role in supporting China’s rapidly growing global automotive exports.

The vessel was designed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI) and built at Wuhu Shipyard Co., Ltd for Intercontinental Shipping. Measuring 199.9m in length and 38m in beam, the AICC Fenghuang offers capacity for 7,000 standard vehicles across 12 decks, including four liftable decks. The ship can accommodate passenger cars, trucks, construction machinery, and new energy vehicles, meeting rising global demand for efficient, lower-carbon automotive logistics.

The ship features a dual-fuel LNG/fuel oil propulsion system with two 2,000m3 LNG C-type tanks, enabling flexible fuel use and significant reductions in emissions. SCR and intelligent control exhaust gas recirculation (ICER) systems further cut NOx, SOx, and methane slip. Additional technologies such as shaft-driven generators and a high-voltage shore power system enable zero-emission operations in port. Collectively, these innovations establish the vessel as a new benchmark for green PCTCs, aligned with the IMO 2050 decarbonisation strategy.

As the classification society, BV worked closely with the shipyard to help ensure compliance with international standards and support the vessel’s safe delivery. Surveyors carried out strict inspections of critical roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) columns, requiring 100% non-destructive testing (NDT), and applied defined procedures to verify the vessel’s extensive fire alarm system.

Matthieu de Tugny, BV EVP Industrials and Commodities, said: “The AICC Fenghuang illustrates how the pure car and truck carrier segment is advancing toward cleaner and smarter operations. Bureau Veritas is proud to support this progress through classification, bringing confidence to innovative projects that are enabling the growth of China’s automotive exports and the global shipping industry’s wider decarbonisation journey.”
