NYK AND BHP PARTNER TO DECARBONISE DRY BULK INDUSTRY

Nov 27, 2025 | Maritime business news

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) has signed an agreement with Australian resources company BHP Group to renew a memorandum of understanding (MoU) initially concluded in June 2022, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to support decarbonisation and improve safety of vessel operations through strengthened collaboration.

The renewed MoU introduces the following updated initiatives:

  • Continued joint research on technologies for ammonia dual-fuel vessels
  • Propulsion and biofuel trials and other measures to advance low-carbon shipping
  • Enhanced safety operation through NYK Line’s vessel tonnage for the maritime transport of a wide range of dry bulk cargoes

By establishing a bilateral collaboration model, NYK Line and BHP aim to build momentum in the dry bulk industry, focusing on both decarbonisation and safe operations.

Emma Roberts, VP Maritime and Supply Chain Excellence, BHP, said: “BHP welcomes the opportunity to build on our shared history with long-term strategic partner, NYK Line. We have a shared commitment to be innovative and to accelerate industry safety, technology, and sustainability performance across the maritime sector. As one of the world’s largest dry bulk charterers, BHP has a deep interest in working alongside our partners to advance a safer, technology-driven, and efficient shipping industry.”

Hiroaki Nishiyama, Managing Executive Officer and Dry Bulk Division CEO, NYK Line, added: “We are delighted to strengthen our strategic partnership with BHP further and work together to promote decarbonisation and enhance safe operations in the dry bulk industry. Amid an uncertain outlook for environmental regulations, we will combine the strengths of both companies to accelerate the development of next-generation environmental technologies and steadily advance toward achieving our net-zero target by 2050.”
