Daehan Shipbuilding of South Korea says it is accelerating the expansion of its Green Ship line-up by consecutively pursuing joint development (JDP) for energy reduction technologies.
The company recently signed a JDP with Norway’s DNV classification and China’s eco-friendly solutions company SETH for a diesel generator battery auxiliary system using shaft generator motors. This technology is an energy storage system (ESS) that stores surplus power in batteries during ship operations and uses it when electricity demand is high. Even as electricity consumption surges, it compensates for the power shortage from batteries, reducing unnecessary operation of generators and thereby lowering fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
Shortly afterwards it signed a JDP with Mokpo National University and ABS for a container ship wind shield technology development project. Windshields apply curved (additive) structures to the front of ships to reduce air resistance generated during navigation. In particular, container ships are heavily affected by wind because containers are loaded high on decks, but windshields help improve wind flow, raising propulsion efficiency and reducing fuel consumption.
Daehan Shipbuilding plans to continue contributing to nurturing local talent and enhancing the competitiveness of Korea’s shipbuilding industry through industry-academia cooperation.
