12-VESSEL LOW-EMISSION VLCC PROGRAMME TO USE WinGD POWER

Jul 2, 2026 | Marine propulsion & machinery news

Swiss marine power company WinGD has secured an order to supply main engines for a series of 12 VLCCs being built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, China, for Dynacom, supporting the delivery of a new generation of efficient, reliable and regulation-ready tanker tonnage.

The 12 vessels will each be powered by a WinGD 6X82-2.0 low-speed engine and equipped with scrubber and high-pressure selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems to ensure compliance with current IMO emissions requirements while delivering high levels of operational efficiency.

The order comes amid strong momentum in the VLCC sector, with owners placing significant investment in modern vessels designed to enhance efficiency, competitiveness and long-term operational performance. According to WinGD, recent ordering activity reflects confidence in the long-term fundamentals of the crude tanker market, as well as the need to renew an ageing global fleet with modern, fuel-efficient tonnage.

The WinGD 6X82-2.0 engine is said to combine proven operational performance with the efficiency and reliability required for today’s tanker market. Its service record and robust design make it suited to owners seeking long-term operational value while meeting increasingly stringent environmental requirements.

Carmelo Cartalemi, WinGD GM Global Sales, said: “For owners investing in large crude carrier fleets, fuel efficiency, reliability and operational performance remain key priorities. We are pleased to support Dynacom with an engine platform that has consistently demonstrated its value in service.”

The X82-2.0 has established a reputation among tanker operators through its combination of efficiency, reliability, and in-service performance. Backed by operational experience, the engine is claimed to offer a proven solution for long-term fleet investment. This experience is complemented by WinGD’s growing lifecycle support offering, including 24×7 operational support, WiDE remote monitoring and diagnostics, and the company’s global service network. Through these services, WinGD works closely with customers to support safe, efficient and reliable operation throughout the engine’s lifecycle.

Cartalemi added: “Fleet renewal is not only about meeting operational requirements, but also about choosing a trusted partner. Combining decades of engine development experience with expanding digital and service capabilities, WinGD works closely with customers to help them meet their operational goals today while preparing for tomorrow’s challenges. Our broad propulsion portfolio enables owners to select the solution that best aligns with their business strategy today. As the industry continues to evolve, we are also developing retrofit and upgrade pathways across our portfolio to support customers respond to changing requirements throughout a vessel’s operating life.”
