Scottish aquaculture feed company BioMar’s ambitious newbuild tender design contract has been awarded to The Norwegian Ship Design Company with a concept developed in close collaboration with Egil Ulvan Rederi.
The new vessel, NSD 75CC, has been designed with energy efficiency as a key priority – from hull design and propulsion systems to operations at fish farms and in port. This aligns closely with BioMar’s ambition to continuously improve resource and energy efficiency throughout its value chain.
The vessel will feature a hybrid propulsion solution combining electric and direct diesel-mechanical propulsion, supported by a large battery package. This provides flexible and energy-efficient operation under varying conditions. The dynamic positioning system has been selected with a focus on low energy consumption and reduced noise levels – particularly important when operating close to fish cages.
At approximately 70m in length and with a capacity of around 4,000 dwt, the vessel has been designed for efficient cargo handling, featuring a side port, elevators, a long-reach unloading boom and a 120t heavy-lift crane.
The vessel is being ordered from Jiangsu SOHO Marine Heavy Industry in China, a shipyard that has demonstrated to the owners its technical expertise and positive, solution-oriented approach.
Norwegian Ship Design MD Gjermund Johannessen said: “We greatly value the close and long-standing cooperation with Egil Ulvan Rederi. Key people in our companies have been working together since before 2000, resulting in the successful delivery of a double-digit number of vessels. We know each other well, have strong mutual trust and share the ambition of continuously exploring new opportunities. The close collaboration between shipowner and designer allows us to develop innovative solutions while building on decades of experience and expertise. With this contract, we now have three vessels under construction at SOHO Shipyard – another strong confirmation of the successful partnership we have built over time.”
