Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (MMMCZCS) and Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) have formalised a strategic partnership to deepen collaboration on maritime decarbonisation, during the naming of very large ammonia carrier (VLAC) ‘Terra Clove’ at HD HHI.
Under the partnership, EPS and MMMCZCS will contribute subject matter experience and collaborate on joint research and industry engagement. Focus areas include alternative fuels, dual-fuel vessels, energy-efficiency technologies, ammonia safety, and methane and ammonia emissions.
The partnership builds on EPS’s role as a founding partner of the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation and on joint work on a white paper examining the design, operational safety and training considerations for ammonia-fuelled VLACs. The white paper is due for release later this year.
MMMCZCS CEO Bo Cerup-Simonsen said: “Partners like EPS are what move ammonia from first-of-a-kind projects to routine commercial use. Each vessel that enters service with ammonia dual-fuel propulsion gives the wider industry the operational evidence it needs to finance, insure, crew and regulate the next one. At the Center, our research on ammonia safety, vessel design and training is now being tested against real ships and real operations, showing that decarbonization is moving from research papers into practice.”
Cyril Ducau, EPS CEO, added: “Bringing ammonia-fuelled vessels into operation requires both investment and collaboration across the industry. Through our ammonia dual-fuel programme, EPS brings practical experience to this partnership, complemented by the Center’s research and technical expertise. Together, we aim to share lessons that strengthen safety, support crew readiness and give the industry greater confidence to adopt ammonia as a marine fuel.”
