Chantiers de l’Atlantique’s Saint-Nazaire yard has delivered the gas-fuelled cruise ship ‘MSC Euribia’, the fifth in MSC’s Meraviglia series and the second MSC Cruises ship to run on LNG.

MSC Euribia is claimed to be the most energy efficient cruise ship ever, and features several environmental technologies including advanced on-board sewage treatment and waste management systems.

Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman MSC Cruise Division said: “ With the delivery of MSC Euribia, we are taking a very big step towards achieving our goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to its exceptional environmental innovations, MSC Euribia offers a revolutionary design from the point of view of energy efficiency, which allows it to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Often, decarbonisation approaches focus exclusively on measures related to energy sources. Although they are an important part of the energy transition, we must not forget the essential role that energy efficiency will play in reducing energy demand today. The cleanest energy is the one we don’t use, and MSC Euribia was built around that principle. Thus, its commissioning marks a very important step towards our goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions maritime operations by 2050. ”

Laurent Castaing, MD Chantiers de l’Atlantique said: “I am very proud of the strength of the partnership between MSC Cruises and Chantiers de l’Atlantique. This fifth and last ship of the Meraviglia class marks the culmination of an already very successful series and the continuation of our joint innovative environmental projects.”

At the same time, a keel laying ceremony was held for the X34 – MSC World America (expected delivery in 2025), the second in MSC’s World Class series.
