AiP FROM BV FOR SUNRUI WIND ASSIST PROPULSION SYSTEM

Jul 8, 2025 | Marine environment & clean shipping news

Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV), has awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) certification to Sunrui Marine Environment Engineering for its Marine Wind Rotor Assist System.

The marine wind rotor assist technology, a promising carbon reduction solution for the shipping industry, provides auxiliary propulsion via aerodynamics, significantly reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Sunrui Marine Environment’s technological breakthroughs in marine wind energy utilisation are said to have drawn wide attention: its developed system overcomes key technologies such as lightweight composite outer cylinder manufacturing, efficient drive control, and intelligent energy-saving optimisation, suitable for both newbuilds and retrofits of existing vessels.

BV’s technical expert team conducted a comprehensive review during the certification process, covering system principles, structural safety, equipment layout, and risk control systems. Special focus was placed on verifying operational safety and emission reduction effectiveness in real-ship applications, ultimately confirming the system fully meets classification society regulations.

This certification recognises Sunrui Marine Environment’s technological innovation as well as underscoring BV’s commitment to advancing the shipping industry’s sustainable transition. Amid the global acceleration of shipping decarbonisation, BV considers its technical audits balance innovation with safety — ensuring emerging technologies like wind assist achieve both emission reduction goals and maritime safety standards through end-to-end evaluations.

As the IMO tightens carbon reduction requirements, auxiliary propulsion technologies (such as wind and photovoltaic) are becoming focal points of industry transformation. BV supports this transition through certification, standards, and collaboration, and will continue partnering with stakeholders to advance low-carbon shipping and realise a zero-carbon future.
