BATTERY TUGBOAT TO BE BUILT IN JAPAN

Jul 22, 2022 | Shipbuilding & ship repair news

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (‘K’ Line) group company Seagate Corporation is to build a new all-electric battery-powered tugboat.

The boat’s hybrid propulsion system will have an electric motor as the main power source, fed by a large capacity lithium-ion battery recharged by land charger, with an onboard generator as an auxiliary power source. This will be the first tugboat with electricity as a main power source in Tokuyama and will be deployed in the first half of 2025 to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emission in the Tokuyama area.

In the future, it will be possible to achieve zero emissions by replacing the fuel for the generator with zero emission energy.

‘K’ Line has set a target for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.
