CAT MARINE LAYS GROUNDWORK FOR FUTURE HYBRID SYSTEMS

Jun 2, 2022 | Marine propulsion & machinery news

Caterpillar Marine has revealed details about its new powertrain control platform, Cat Canopy, that will underpin its future integrated power system solutions.

Derrick York, MD Caterpillar Marine, said: “By leveraging over 15 years of hybrid expertise across Caterpillar’s enterprise portfolio, Cat Canopy will deliver intelligent control, seamless integration, and powerful diagnostic capabilities. Coupled with service and support from Caterpillar’s Marine dealer network, Cat Canopy will help our customers more easily achieve their environmental and operational goals.”

In a departure from hybrid system offerings typically seen in the industry, Cat Canopy takes a topological approach to managing the system of power producers and converters. The most critical functionality of the control system, specifically the complex interactions between the hybrid system components, batteries, and vessel switchboard, reside in Cat Canopy’s central control program. This integrates and optimises distributed controls across numerous components of hybrid power systems.

Customers are expected to benefit from frequent system updates and upgrades which are easily enabled by the Cat Canopy architecture. This assures that the most important piece of their Caterpillar Marine electrified solution, the control system, will remain a modern and supported product long after vessel delivery. As Caterpillar Marine continues to deploy integrated power system solutions, Cat Canopy will be the instrumental technology behind the value that those solutions will deliver, available through Caterpillar’s global dealer network.
