DENMARK PROPOSES GREEN SHIPPING FUELS FROM NEW OFFSHORE WIND

According to Danish maritime industry body Danske Rederier, a new offshore wind tender – the largest in Denmark’s history – has been issued,  under which companies can bid for the construction of as many as six wind farms.

This, says Danske Rederier, brings joy to Danish Shipping Companies, as the shipping companies will demand green fuels in a big way. The new installations, in the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Kattegat, must deliver at least 6 GW of green power, which will not only serve millions of households in Denmark and elsewhere, but also enable production of hydrogen for green shipping and aviation fuels.

Denmark’s Climate, Energy and Supply Minister Lars Aagaard said: “Finally, we can press the button and open the largest offshore wind supply in Denmark’s history. With wind turbines in the hundreds, we are preparing ourselves against Putin’s black gas, and today Denmark has come closer to becoming Europe’s green powerhouse. When the turbines spin, we can cover all of Denmark’s electricity consumption with green electricity – and we can produce hydrogen and green fuels for ships and planes. It is projects on this scale that can make a big green difference, for the climate and for our safety. Not just for Denmark, but for the whole of Europe.”

Anne H Steffensen, CEO Danske Rederier, said: “I am particularly pleased that the minister specifically mentions the potential of producing green fuels for shipping. The Danish shipping companies will demand green fuels on a large scale in the coming years, when shipping must work towards becoming climate neutral.”

The new offshore wind farms can create thousands of new green jobs, especially affecting ports such as Esbjerg, Hvide Sande, Thorsminde and Thyborøn.

Steffensen continued: “We need much more renewable energy when we have to convert our society and our industries from fossil fuels to green fuels. The historically large supply is really good news. I am particularly pleased that the minister specifically mentions the potential of producing green fuels for shipping. It is fantastic if a large part of these fuels can be produced here in Denmark.”
