FERRY DESIGN CONCENTRATES ON WEIGHT AND EFFICIENCY

Mar 31, 2026 | Ship design & naval architecture news

UM Shipyard of Türkiye has unveiled its Sensus Ecocat concept, described as a ground-breaking high-speed passenger ferry with an innovative, lightweight structure.

The objective of the design is to meet emission standards through a highly fuel-efficient light weight design and construction; the total structural weight of the 42m Sensus Ecocat estimated at 55t.

With fuel consumption being the largest expense for operators, UM Shipyard says the Sensus Ecocat offers significant savings compared to similar vessels, thanks to its advanced hydrodynamics. While high-speed crafts are not currently categorized under EEDI regulations, the Sensus Ecocat is said to meet future emission restrictions thanks to its high efficiency, providing a sustainable and cost-effective solution that anticipates and surpasses industry standards.

Another feature of the design is that the main machinery, generator groups, critical equipment, and piping is positioned on the main deck, to ensure easy access for maintenance and repair tasks, allowing for efficient and problem-free upkeep.

The company says that while zero-emission technologies have predominantly targeted lower speed vessels and shorter ranges, advancements catering to high-speed vessels are anticipated. so the design recognises that weight and dimension challenges must be addressed to fully embrace these technologies. The Sensus Ecocat is considered to hold a significant advantage due to its hydrodynamic characteristics, resulting in a low power requirement. This positions the vessel to leverage the benefits of solid-state battery electric propulsion technologies when they inevitably hit the market.

The current design is for a 42m high speed passenger ferry, but 65m and 85m ro-pax versions are expected in the near future.
