FKAB-DESIGNED NH3 TANKER CARRIES OUT FIRST STS BUNKERING OPERATION.

Oct 20, 2026 | Marine fuel & lubricant news

The FKAB Marine Design L21 ammonia carrier ‘Shenghang Yongle’, which was recently converted for ship-to-ship liquid ammonia fuel bunkering, has successfully completed the first ship-to-ship bunkering operation of green ammonia.

The bunker operation was conducted in China, at Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province. Operated by Jiangsu Andefu Energy Development, Shenghang Yongle, the world’s first dedicated liquid ammonia bunkering vessel, successfully supplied 1,000t of green ammonia to Mineral Europa, an ammonia-powered vessel owned by Belgian maritime group CMB.Tech.

The operation was jointly conducted by China Energy Engineering Group Hydrogen Energy, CMB.Tech, and Jiangsu Andefu Energy Technology. This marks the first time that the entire green ammonia value chain covering production, transportation, storage, bunkering and application has been fully connected. It is said to represent a significant step forward for green ammonia as a zero-carbon alternative fuel for deep-sea shipping, moving it from small-scale demonstration towards commercial operation.

As the world’s first green ammonia ship-to-ship bunkering operation, the project is believed to have achieved four ‘global firsts’:

  • The world’s first commercial ship-to-ship bunkering operation using green ammonia
  • The commissioning of the world’s first dedicated ammonia fuel bunkering vessel
  • The issuance of the world’s first ship-to-ship liquid ammonia bunkering licence
  • And the world’s first green ammonia project directly connected with green power and enabling full-chain carbon footprint traceability.
