FUEL REFORMER TO CUT BULK CARRIER EMISSIONS

May 28, 2025 | Marine fuel & lubricant news

Bontrup Logistics, a specialist in bulk logistics and maritime transportation, which ships more than 12m tonnes of rock products per year, has selected Fuelre4m’s high efficiency fuel reforming technology to power its bulk carrier, ‘Bontrup Pearl’, to support a major climate resilience initiative in the Pacific.

This follows a three-month trial of Fuelre4m technology on board the company’s Yeoman Bridge bulk carrier. The voyage begins in the UAE, departing from the Port of Ras Al Khaimah, delivering 40,000t of rock armour for constructing a new 1.8km sea wall that will protect the vulnerable island of Ebeye in the Marshall Islands, located in the central Pacific Ocean, from future flooding caused by rising sea levels. Its low elevation makes it especially susceptible to rising sea levels and storm surges linked to climate change.

This milestone is seen as a critical step toward enhancing the resilience of small island nations in the face of climate change, exemplifying international collaboration at its best.

Fuelre4m’s fuel treatment technology has proven capable of delivering both environmental and operational benefits without requiring engine modifications. Based on first performance data from Bontrup Pearl, the company has already recorded positive indications on vessel speed and fuel efficiency. These results build on the trial onboard Yeoman Bridge, which delivered:

  • 44% reduction in NOx emissions.
  • Operational and fuel stability with no disruption to engine performance or operations.
  • Verified improvements in thrust and fuel-to-power efficiency, indicating optimised engine performance at reduced engine load.

These results were delivered under real-world conditions, demonstrating the ability of Fuelre4m’s solution to improve combustion efficiency and reduce maintenance needs, while maintaining full engine reliability.

Sipke de Vries, GM Bontrup Logistics, said: “Using Fuelre4m’s fuel technology in our bulk carriers has already delivered measurable gains in fuel efficiency and engine performance, with the full expectation that we will find a significant reduction in fuel consumption. Our goal is to reduce emissions and carbon footprint, critical for meeting environmental targets, but also extends equipment life by improving combustion and reducing deposits. For long-haul operations, especially with self-unloading vessels like the Bontrup Pearl, that kind of reliability and savings make a real difference to reduce the environmental impact.”

Fuelre4m says it is rapidly gaining success across the maritime sector. Its proprietary fuel treatment technology optimises combustion without requiring engine modifications, claiming to offer a cost-effective, drop-in solution for operators focused on both sustainability and performance.

Rob Mortimer, CEO Fuelre4m, said: “We are proud to support Bontrup Logistics and other forward-thinking operators with fuel solutions that enhance both performance and sustainability. Our fuel technology is designed specifically for the demands of large-scale marine logistics, optimising fuel burn, reducing maintenance, and cutting emissions without compromising power. It is about making every voyage cleaner, more efficient, and future ready.”

Following the successful Yeoman Bridge trial, Bontrup Logistics is rolling out Fuelre4m’s technology across additional vessels, including the Bontrup Pearl. These efforts are part of the company’s broader commitment to sustainable shipping and responsible resource transport in remote and environmentally sensitive regions.
