GREEN CORRIDORS PROVIDE KEY TO ZERO-EMISSION SHIPPING ROUTES

Nov 16, 2022 | Marine environment & clean shipping news

An event held as part of COP27 at the Danish Pavilion by the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission launched the Green Shipping Corridor Hub – an interactive platform and toolkit to support the development of green shipping corridors.

The Zero-Emission Shipping Mission is an ambitious alliance between countries, the private sector, research institutes, and civil society. It is driven by 12 current members, and co-led by the governments of Denmark, Norway, and the United States, along with the Global Maritime Forum and Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping as industry co-leads. The Hub marks the first action to be delivered from the Mission’s Action Plan, published less than two months ago at the Global Clean Energy Action Forum in Pittsburgh.

Michael Berube, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Sustainable Transportation at US Department of Energy (DOE) and Chair of the Executive Committee of the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission, said: “Today, the members of the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission are taking the lead in accelerating the transition to zero-emission shipping as we launch the Green Corridors Hub to support the development of green corridors. It is an important step towards reaching the Mission Goals as the development of Green Corridors is a key catalyst in enabling ship-owners to strategically plan for and rely on vessels that operate on zero-emission fuels.”

Dr Eleanor Webster, Head of Mission Innovation Secretariat, added: “For COP27 to be successful, we must translate words into action. Through its Green Shipping Corridors Hub, the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission is creating the tools to catalyse decarbonisation in one of the hardest-to-abate sectors. By enabling the public and private sectors to come together, we can make zero-emission shipping a reality.”

The Hub presents three initial tools, which have been developed for use by both industry and governments to support the development of Green Corridors:

  • The Route Tracker is an interactive map, providing a complete and up-to-date mapping of all announced Green Corridor initiatives globally.
  • The Matchmaker is an interactive tool, enabling stakeholders interested in developing green shipping corridors globally to find collaborators across the maritime/energy value chain.
  • The curated Library makes the major analyses, frameworks, guides and assessments relating to Green Corridors easily available in one place for the first time.

In addition to these tools, three new products supporting the development of Green Corridors are being launched via the Hub, highlighting its intended role as a platform for knowledge sharing around Corridors:

  • A ‘Pre-Feasibility Blueprint’ for assessing the viability of potential Corridor projects created by the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Center for Zero-Carbon Shipping
  • The ‘2022 Annual Progress Report on Green Shipping Corridors’ from the Getting to Zero Coalition, which provides a mapping and analysis of progress developing Green Corridors since COP26, and
  • First-of-a-kind ‘route-level’ data from UMAS and the Getting to Zero Coalition. The rich data quantifies the suitability of individual shipping routes for early adoption of hydrogen-derived fuels. The aim of the data is to support governments and industry in finding and successfully exploiting their Green Corridor opportunities.

All three products can be found in the Library.

To support the Mission’s ambition for the Hub to be a focal point for Green Corridor efforts, not only will the initial three tools on the platform be regularly updated with new information and data going forwards, but new tools and resources will be added too, to further support the development of Green Corridors. The tools, documents, and other resources on the Hub platform are provided by the members of the Shipping Mission to help accelerate the maritime energy transition. The launch is a call to all stakeholders to engage with and benefit from the tools on the platform.
