HOLLAND SHIPYARDS GROUP NAMES TWO MPP COASTERS FOR HARTEL

Apr 29, 2025 | Shipbuilding & ship repair news

Holland Shipyards Group has christened two newly built MPP coasters: ‘Waalvliet’ and ‘Rijnvliet’ at the Werkendam, Netherlands, shipyard.

These vessels feature wind-assisted diesel-electric propulsion and are part of a series of shortsea coasters commissioned by Hartel Shipping & Chartering, part of the Hudig & Veder Group. Purpose-built to meet the operational demands of the European shortsea market, they are designed to combine flexibility, cargo efficiency and robust construction.

The Waalvliet and Rijnvliet are 98m long and are equipped to transport a wide variety of cargoes throughout Europe. With a deadweight of approximately 4,200t and cargo hold with tween deck, the vessels are tailored for loading flexibility, capable of carrying bulk, breakbulk, and containers. They are equipped with a moveable bulkhead and pontoon hatch covers, enabling them to seamlessly adapt to different cargo requirements.

Consistent with Holland Shipyards Group’s commitment to building greener vessels, the coasters feature a fuel-efficient diesel-electric drivetrain and are designed to facilitate future upgrades to more sustainable propulsion technologies. This forward-compatible design is said to underline both companies’ ambition to reduce environmental impact in the maritime logistics sector.
