At a recent event held in Lisbon and organised by IMO and the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), with support from the World Maritime University (WMU), maritime experts shared views and experiences on the evolving competence and training needs for seafarers as the maritime sector transitions to new fuels and technologies.
The event brought together representatives from maritime administrations, industry, maritime education and training institutions, international organisations and academia. Discussions addressed competence and training requirements associated with the use of alternative fuels and emerging technologies, including ammonia, methanol, hydrogen, batteries and onboard carbon capture systems. Participants examined how training and competence frameworks can develop alongside technological and operational developments.
The event highlighted efforts underway at IMO to support the transition, including the ongoing comprehensive review of the STCW Convention and Code and work on development of training provisions for seafarers serving on ships using alternative fuels and new technologies. The importance of continued cooperation between regulators, industry and maritime education and training institutions was emphasized to ensure training frameworks keep pace with technological and operational developments.
Technical visits organised by EMSA complemented the programme, giving participants insight into practical applications of emerging technologies and innovative training tools. The visits included a battery-powered vessel, its e-Lab and virtual reality training facilities, as well as the European Maritime Awareness Centre (EMAC).
The event, delivered under the IMO Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP), is believed to have reinforced the importance of international cooperation and dialogue to support seafarers and maritime training institutions as the industry adopts new fuels and technologies.
