INTERNATIONAL WHITEPAPER EXPLORES DATA COLLABORATION

Apr 17, 2025 | Marine coatings & hull protection news

AkzoNobel marine coatings company International has published a new whitepaper on how data collaboration between fouling control coating experts and vessel operators can drive more informed decision-making, enhance vessel performance reliability and support sustainability goals.

The research includes a detailed case study of three LNG vessels tracked over a 60-month service period, all coated with Intersleek 1100SR, a high performance fouling release coating based on biocide-free silicone technology.

The vessels were found to have performed in compliance with agreed performance limits for energy efficiency and emissions—including CII rating targets. The application of Intersleek 1100SR significantly contributed to a smooth and clean hull condition. Underwater inspections showed minimal biofouling, even in challenging environments.

The paper explores the complexities of achieving consistency across a fleet. Despite similarities in vessel type and operations, different results were observed. This is considered to reinforce the need for high levels of communication, multiple verification methods and expert guidance throughout dry docking and in-service periods.

A report by the Global Maritime Forum cites that inaccurate and opaque data can reduce trust between shipowners and data providers (e.g., charterers). The International whitepaper emphasises the importance of companion datasets, such as hull inspections, to accurately diagnose performance issues.

As regulatory pressures grow, the collaborative, data-led approach from International is intended to empowers operators to:

  • Long-term sustainability planning
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Strategic investment decisions

International applies a methodology aligned with ISO 19030, which includes vessel performance metrics, average hull roughness (AHR) measurements, underwater inspections and operational data analysis. This combination allows for a more accurate interpretation of performance trends, empowering customers with better decisions.

Dr Barry Kidd, Vessel Performance Manager, AkzoNobel, said: “This whitepaper emphasises the importance of collaboration with experts to enhance data transparency and confidence in inspection data, which is crucial for effective decision making. As the shipping industry faces increasing regulatory pressures to reduce carbon emissions, a tailored approach and partnership mentality to coating selection and fleet management is essential. Through our innovative coatings, hull performance team, data-driven insights and the use of our digital forecasting tool, we are uniquely positioned to be a reliable partner to shipowners.”
