The CIMC Raffles Longkou Shipyard in China has begun construction of the first of two 6,500 CEU PCTC vessels for Wallenius, which will be chartered to Volkswagen Group.

In summer 2021, Wallenius Marine and Volkswagen signed a contract for two multi-fuel vessels with the ability to carry 6,500 cars each. Wallenius Marine leads the ship design and newbuilding project. After delivery, the vessels will be used to transport new vehicles of the Volkswagen Group for at least ten years, managed by Wallenius Marine.

Design is by Danish naval architect Knud E Hansen and Wallenius Marine, known as the Sleipner concept. The 200m long PCTC features various measures to reduce the environmental footprint, including needing no water ballast when fully loaded.

The first vessel is scheduled to be launched in June 2023, with delivery planned for October of that year. The sister vessel will be delivered in 2024.
