Apr 29, 2024 | Shipbuilding & ship repair news

Korea Shipbuilding has successfully completed three 8,000 TEU container ships, forming the first order since the company’s foundation, which were named in a simultaneous ceremony at the Haenam Shipyard.

The vessels were named Catherine C, Greenland and Greenville respectively. These are three of four 8,000 TEU vessels ordered from Korea Shipbuilding by Greek shipping company Danaos in April 2022, marking the company’s entry into the container market.

The ships are 272m long, 24.6m high and 42.8m wide. All are designed to be methanol-ready, which allows the use of eco-friendly fuel in the future. Other eco-friendly technology includes connection for onshore power supply and exhausrt gas scrubbers, to reduce SOx emissions.

In the early days of its existence, Korea Shipbuilding shifted its product line from a focus on bulk carriers to tank ships, and has proved its ability to build shuttle tankers and container ships, in a diversified product portfolio. In 2023 Korea Shipbuilding received orders for 14 ships, exceeding its order target by 130% (14 ships ordered, $1.15bn), which the company believes makes it the only mid-sized shipbuilder currently turning a profit.
