LR CLASS FOR FIRST SDARI-DESIGNED AMMONIA-READY CONTAINER SHIP

May 12, 2025 | Ship classification news

The ‘Kota Oasis’, first of four 8,200 TEU membrane-type LNG dual-fuel container ships built for Singapore’s Pacific International Lines (PIL) with Lloyd’s Register (LR) providing classification and certification services, was recently delivered and entered service at New Yangzi Shipbuilding.

As the lead vessel in the ‘O-class’ series of dual-fuel container vessels, the Kota Oasis was jointly developed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI) and New Yangzi Shipbuilding. With a total length of 260m, the vessel is designed to operate efficiently on both regional feeder routes and deep-sea trades.

Innovative features of the vessel include:

  • GTT Mk III membrane tank technology: This is the first collaboration between a private Chinese shipyard and GTT, showcasing the growing capabilities of China’s private shipbuilding sector in advanced LNG containment technology.
  • Ammonia-ready design: The fuel tanks have been certified to LR’s Ammonia-Ready class notation, future-proofing the vessel for ammonia fuel conversion.
  • Dual-fuel propulsion system: Equipped with a Wärtsilä LNG supply system, the vessel reduces carbon emissions by 20%, NOx by 85%, and SOx by 99%, while its EEDI complies with Tier III requirements.
  • Intelligent energy management: The main engine integrates an intelligent control by exhaust recycling (iCER) system to minimise methane slip, and the generators are fitted with SCR systems, ensuring compliance with IMO Tier III NOx standards.

Sau Weng Tang, LR President, Greater China, said: “The Kota Oasis represents a critical milestone in shipping’s decarbonisation journey. LR’s rigorous surveys and technical collaboration have ensured that this vessel meets the highest international standards for safety and environmental performance.”

The successful delivery of the Kota Oasis is said to underscore LR’s collaboration with industry partners to advance sustainable technologies. LR says it remains committed to supporting shipowners and shipyards with innovative solutions to achieve the IMO 2050 emission reduction goals.
