NES TO EQUIP ELECTRICALLY-POWERED FISH CARRIER

Norwegian Electric Systems (NES) has been awarded a contract to act as system integrator and deliver power and automation systems to a newbuild live fish carrier that shipbuilder Fitjar Mekaniske Verksted is constructing for North Salmon Service.

In addition to its role as system integrator, NES will deliver motors, including propulsion and bow thrusters, generators, transformers, AC/DC switchboards, a battery pack, and a charging solution. NES will also provide an integrated automation system (IAS) and power management system (PMS). NES is a subsidiary of HAV Group.

NES MD Siv Remøy-Vangen said: “We’re happy to see activity picking up in the aquaculture segment after a quiet period following the 2023 tax changes. This contract follows a constructive dialogue with both the owner and the yard, reflecting a shared focus on vessel performance and long-term value. We look forward to continuing the collaboration with both Fitjar Mekaniske Verksted and North Salmon Service.”

NES’ system and equipment deliveries are planned for the second half of 2026 and the first half of 2027.

Hugo Strand, CEO Fitjar Mekaniske Verksted, said: “NES has been involved in the sales-phase of this innovative HAV 595 design, and I’m convinced they will be a reliable and competent supplier to FMV, and also pull their weight when the ship enters operations”.

Earlier in 2025, NES sister company HAV Design was contracted to design the live fish carrier with a fish well capacity of 5,000m3. The HAV 595 design supports a range of live fish operations, including transport and sorting. It is designed to offer greater operational capacity than current industry standards and to set new benchmarks in biosecurity, fish welfare, cost-efficiency, and environmental performance.

NES’s integrated energy and control system will ensure safe, energy-efficient and stable operations for vessels carrying large volumes of fish. The shipowner is Norwegian aquaculture logistics operator North Salmon Service.

Jan Klokk, VP sales, NES, said: “We are delivering well-proven power and automation systems to this vessel. Now we look forward to commencing the work in close cooperation with Fitjar Mekaniske Verksted, North Salmon Service, and our sister company, HAV Design.”
