NORSEPOWER ROTORSAIL FOR THIRD NORWEGIAN CCS VESSEL

Oct 12, 2023 | Marine environment & clean shipping news

Mechanical sail developer Norsepower is supporting Northern Lights, a joint venture between oil majors Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies, on its decarbonisation journey.

The third Northern Lights CO2 carrier vessel, to built by Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore (DSOC), will be powered by Norsepower’s RotorSail auxiliary wind propulsion technology and a dual-fuel LNG engine. The Northern Lights joint venture holds Norway’s inaugural CO₂ storage license on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, and it is a key component of the government’s Longship initiative and climate strategy.

This milestone deal marks the collaboration of Norsepower with three industry giants: TotalEnergies, currently ranked as the 21st largest company in the world, Equinor, a Norwegian state-owned multinational energy company and Shell, a global energy corporation. Norsepower is helping the industry to decarbonise its supply chains across a range of vessel types.

Norsepower believes its dominance in the global auxiliary wind propulsion market is propelling the industry toward a future marked by environmentally responsible choices and operational efficiencies. Norsepower is on a trajectory towards delivering its ground-breaking technology to fleets worldwide. At present, 16 units of Norsepower’s RotorSail have been successfully installed on seven vessels – with an additional 14 units set to join the green revolution within the coming year. Collectively, Norsepower’s existing clientele operates thousands of ships, and future ambition is firmly locked at fleet-wide deliveries enabling the maritime industry to save fuel and the planet.

As the market for clean technology and wind propulsion solutions continues to grow, Norsepower says it is poised to lead the way with proven, third-party verified savings.
