NYK SECURES AMMONIA FUEL SUPPLY FOR A-TUG

Apr 12, 2024 | Marine fuel & lubricant news

NYK has announced an agreement for the regular supply of ammonia fuel to the company’s ammonia-fuelled tugboat ‘A-tug’, due to be completed in June 2024.

Shin Nippon Kaiyosha, the NYK Group company that will operate the A-tug, will received fuel from marine ammonia supplier JERA, in a move that NYK says marks a significant step toward the widespread use of fuel ammonia in the marine transport industry. The first ammonia bunkering, believed to be the first time ammonia has been delivered truck-to-ship, will take place at the end of May 2024.

In December 2023, JERA, Resonac, and NYK signed an agreement to jointly study the supply of fuel ammonia to ships and have been working together to establish safe operation methods, build a system for transporting and receiving ammonia in port areas, and lobby relevant authorities to formulate various rules for the supply.

Having reached a safe and secure point of supplying fuel ammonia to ships, NYK has decided to take fuel from an ammonia tank truck at the port of Yokohama.
