NYK SIGNS CHARTER AGREEMENT FOR AMMONIA FUEL TRANSPORT

Dec 6, 2023 | Marine fuel & lubricant news

NYK of Japan has signed a time charter contract with Mitsui & Co for the transport of ammonia, using the NYK-owned and operated vessel 35,500m3 ‘Berlian Ekuator’.

The ammonia fuel will be used by JERA in what is thought to be the world’s first large-scale fuel-conversion demonstration test, which will be conducted at unit 4 of JERA’s Hekinan Thermal Power Station, using 20% ammonia. In June 2023, Mitsui and JERA signed an ammonia sales and purchase agreement to be used in the demonstration test.

Through this agreement, NYK will contribute to the global energy transition by accumulating practical knowledge on the handling of ammonia and developing a marine transportation system for the future expansion of the ammonia fuel market.
