Wallenius Wilhelmsen has become a member of the Smart Freight Centre (SFC), a global non-profit organisation focused on climate action in the freight sector when the company attended the recent Global Ro-Ro Community kick-off meeting hosted by SFC in Amsterdam.
Bringing together carriers and shippers, the group’s goal is to establish uniform standards to accelerate the decarbonisation process within the ro-ro shipping industry, creating common ground for fair competition between carriers in terms of scope 3 GHG emissions accounting.
Jørgen Westrum Thorsen, Senior Manager, Sustainability, Wallenius Wilhelmsen said: “We are very happy to be collaborating with our peers and leveraging SFC’s extensive experience to develop a clear and consistent standard to accurately allocate the scope 3 emissions of our cargo. Comparability is a key market driver to incentivise others on decarbonisation journey.”
Wallenius Wilhelmsen helped establish the Global Ro-Ro Community in partnership with SFC, NYK, and ClassNK. The kick-off meeting was attended by the initial community members as well as other operators from Japan, Korea, Europe and Latin America, and some well-known verification bodies and cargo owners.
Moving forward, the group intends to have a final draft ISO 14083 / GLEC compliant global standard methodology for scope 3 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions accounting for deep-sea Ro-Ro shipping ready by the end of year.
