Feb 6, 2024 | Shipbuilding & ship repair news

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has signed a KRW 4.57trn contract with a Middle East shipowner for 15 LNG carriers of 170,4000 ㎥ capacity to be delivered by October 2028.

The contract value surpasses the company’s previous record for the largest single order of KRW 3.95trn set by signing a newbuilding contract for 16 methanol-powered container ships in July 2023.

Samsung Heavy Industries’ cumulative contract performance for 2024 has now reached 17 ships (15 LNG carriers, two ammonia carriers) amounting to US$ 3.7bn in just over a month, representing nearly half of last year’s total of US$ 8.3bn. SHI’s order backlog for high-value LNG carriers now encompasses a total of 90 ships.

An SHI statement read that with this large-scale contract, the orientation towards profitability in selecting orders will gain momentum.
