TT-LINE ORDERS SECOND BATTERY-LNG HYBRID RO-PAX

Jul 10, 2026 | Shipbuilding & ship repair news

Baltic ferry operator TT-Line has confirmed the order of a second next-generation LNG-hybrid ferry, which the company says marks another major milestone in its fleet renewal and sustainability strategy.

Like the first Green Ship 2.0, scheduled for delivery by summer 2030, the second newbuild will be constructed by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing.

Building on customer Feedback and operational performance of the first-generation green ships Nils Holgersson and Peter Pan, the two Green Ships 2.0 have been designed to significantly increase transport capacity while further enhancing operational efficiency, environmental performance and passenger comfort. Each vessel is designed to accommodate up to 1000 persons on board. Freight capacity will increase to 5,400 lane metres per vessel, enabling TT-Line to meet a growing demand for efficient and sustainable freight and passenger transport across the Baltic Sea.

Both Green Ships 2.0 feature an advanced LNG-hybrid propulsion system supported by an LFP battery energy storage system with capacity between 5.5MWh and 10MWh. The battery system has been designed to enable fully electric propulsion and can be further scaled with additional batteries in the future. Further battery rooms and a future-ready electrical architecture will support continued technological development and increasing electrification throughout the vessels’ operational lifetime. The ships, designed by Danish naval architects OSK Ship Design, have two LNG fuel tanks of 500m3 each.

The integration of a battery energy storage system will allow for silent and emission-free operation during port stays and manoeuvring. Combined with advanced power-take-in and power-take-out technology, the hybrid propulsion arrangement will optimise energy consumption, lower peak load requirements, and provide greater operational flexibility. In addition, both vessels will feature enhanced shore power capabilities, facilitating efficient high-capacity battery charging during port calls.

Bernhard Termühlen, CEO TT-Line, said: “The order of a second Green Ship 2.0 demonstrates TT-Line’s long-term commitment to provide efficient and state of the art transport solutions in the Baltic Sea between Sweden, Germany, Poland and Lithuania”

Andreas Schärli, COO TT-Line, added: “By adding a second Green Ship 2.0, we are accelerating the transformation of our fleet. The combination of LNG propulsion, large-scale battery technology and advanced shore power capabilities provides the flexibility needed to meet both today’s and tomorrow’s environmental challenges. With expandable battery capacity, both vessels are designed for fully electric operation in the future.”
