VEER CHOOSES FOSEN TO BUILD ZERO-CARBON CONTAINER SHIPS

Clean shipping company Veer, headquartered in the Bahamas, is reported to have signed a letter of intent (LoI) with Norway’s Fosen Shipyard to build the first two of Veer’s planned zero-emission container ships.

The vessels will be constructed at the former Volkswerft yard in Stralsund, Germany, now known as Fosen Yard Stralsund, at which Fosen leased the major part in 2022. Veer’s ‘ Design No1’ has received Approval in Principle from ABS, with ‘Silent-E’ Notation, and is described as “absolute zero emissions”, making it exempt from the EU ETS and suitable for operating in protected areas.

Carsten Stellamanns, CEO Fosen Shipyard said: “We are delighted and excited that Veer has chosen Fosen to build the first zero-emissions container carrier in Germany. Together with Veer we are looking forward to creating a game-changing concept and bringing it to the waters.”

Veer has engaged Bernhard Schulte Ship Management for technical management, and has arranged finance for the construction from Dutch financier Prow Capital. The company says it is actively seeking partners for chartering the clean liner services.

The 100m long vessel design is capable of carrying 152 TEU, including 12 reefer containers. It features hydrogen fuel cells as well as 62.5m DynaRig wind assisted propulsion. The hull design is optimised for sail power, with a claimed maximum speed of 18 knots under sail, and a range of 1200 naut mile fuelled by green hydrogen. The first ship is scheduled to enter service during 2027.
