WALLENIUS WILHELMSEN JOINS DECARBONISATION COALITION

Apr 19, 2024 | Maritime business news

Ro-ro operator Wallenius Wilhelmsen has added its voice to global public-private partnership, the First Movers Coalition (FMC), which is working to scale the most critical, emerging climate technologies required to decarbonise the world’s heavy-emitting sectors.

The move aligns with the company’s strategic goals, with a commitment it describes as unique, covering activities at sea and onshore.

Lasse Kristoffersen, Wallenius Wilhelmsen CEO said: “I am delighted to confirm that Wallenius Wilhelmsen ASA will join the First Movers Coalition with commitments in both the Shipping and Logistics sectors.”

Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s targets for 2030 is to ensure that at least 5% of deep-sea shipping operations are powered by zero-emission fuels and that at least 30% of new heavy-duty truck purchases are zero-emission vehicles. In addition, joining working groups is seen as particularly important in line with the ambition to offer a zero-emission end-to-end service by 2027.

Working together with various peers from across the shipping and logistics industries, the company hopes to benefit from knowledge sharing and building consensus around how best to communicate future fuel needs to the market in a coherent and focused way.

Kristoffersen added: “Wallenius Wilhelmsen will aim to support member recruitment and actively participate in the development of coalition activities.”

The FMC project was initiated in 2021 by the World Economic Forum and the Office of the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry. Today FMC includes 96 members, and aims to prompt market demand for technologies critical for achieving a net-zero future.
