Wärtsilä Gas Solutions has been contracted to supply the fuel gas supply and cargo handling systems for two new 51,350m3 capacity mid-size ammonia-fuelled liquid ammonia carriers, which will also be capable of carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
The ships are being built at the Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering shipyard in China and will be owned by a joint venture between Navigator Gas and Norway based Amon Maritime.
According to Wartsila, as the shipping industry transitions to decarbonising operations, ammonia is emerging as a carbon free alternative marine fuel. The Wärtsilä systems are designed to operate with ammonia for both the ships’ two-stroke and four-stroke engines, enabling these two vessels to operate with dual-fuel engines capable of running with ammonia.
Hans Jakob Buvarp, Sales Manager, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, said: “Wärtsilä Gas Solutions is a market leader in cargo handling and fuel gas supply systems for medium sized gas carrier vessels. This order further strengthens our position and is yet another proof point of executing our strategy focused on shaping the decarbonisation of marine.”
The Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for delivery to the yard in Q3 2027.
